Have your say on the Council's budget
Havering, like all councils, is facing a major financial challenge. We need to reduce our overall budget by around a third over the next four years, in response to Government funding cuts, inflationary costs and a growing and ageing population. Havering already receives the fourth lowest Government grant in London per head of population and has saved £40 million over the past four years - so this task will not be easy.
The Council's Cabinet has set out a range of proposals to close the budget gap for the next two years. The proposals also go a long way towards closing the entire four year budget gap. The aim of the budget proposals is to save money, whilst protecting the services that matter most to residents - based on what you have told us in the past. We also need to preserve a number of services that people rely on to live safe and secure lives, as well as the things that we have to do by law. This is a balancing act - we simply can't afford to do everything in the same way as we used to, but we also don't want to scrap the services that you most value. There are no perfect answers and we will have to make some difficult decisions in order to balance the books.
So we would like to hear your thoughts on our proposals and any suggestions you may have about balancing our savings in a different way. Before completing any of the consultation questionnaires, we would recommend reading Havering's Budget - a short guide. If you would like to read more detailed information on the proposals before completing the consultations, please revisit our website from Monday 6 October.
The consultations close on Monday 29 December 2014 and final decisions on the budget and council tax will be made early in the new year.
